Hi CSS IMU-ers! I know it's been a very long time since anyone last posted anything here.

Sorry about that. Anyway, from now on, we shall use this blog as one of our platforms to keep you guys updated!

So let's begin!

What we're planning to do this term:

• Welcoming Party on March 19th
  
• Campus Mass
• Way of the Cross
• Weekly Praise & Worship sessions
• The postponed session on why and how to make a good Confession
• Fund raising
  
• Coming up with our very own club T-shirt and badge!
• Community service (home visits, awareness campaigns, etc)
• Wardening services at mass
  
• Getting together to go for mass on the Weekends, Feast days, etc (for more details on this, please email us @ css.imu@gmail.com)
• As well as some other interesting things like rosary-making, bonding sessions, and maybe even a camp ;)
  

Also, we have an upcoming joint event with the Student Representative Council (SRC) and the other religious clubs in IMU, such as the Muslim Student Society (MSoc), the Buddhist Society, and the Christian Fellowship (CF). This event is the INTER-FAITH FORUM.

Also, I am proud to announce we are now affiliated with the NGO, Habitat for Humanity.

But basically, HFH is a great organization with branches worldwide, which deals with poverty housing. HFH is concerned with creating an awareness that there are indeed people living in such dire situations and then proceeding to give these people a HAND-UP in life and not a HAND-DOWN, (which means HFH encourages the patrons to pay for their own new homes but at a much reduced cost so as to empower them instead having them expect things, i.e "GIVE a man a fish, he will eat for a day, TEACH a man to fish, and he'll eat for a life time").

Among the projects we will do as a club is to help create an awareness for poverty housing amongst IMU students and staff. More information on this project will be posted up soon. Keep an eye out for it! If you have any ideas on this or want to participate, please do email us. The more the merrier!

The First Sunday of Advent

This week is the first sunday of Advent. And this week is when we light the first of four candles - the candle of Hope.

Hope has been a massively marketed concept these days.

And yet, sometimes we fail to understand the magnitude of this hope. Being in Malaysia, it's relatively easy to take the world for granted, to always think that the world will catch us when we fall. It is easy for us, as Catholics and Christians, to hold on to our faith, because God seems to have made it good for us. So easy for us to cling on to this image of Christ as a loving Redeemer and Savior.

Others have a different story to tell.

When senseless destruction rocks the world, when people are killed for no apparent reason, when family members are snatched away in one fell moment, well...hope does not come so easy.

But there is hope. There will always be hope. And we as Christians live with this hope in our hearts because of the knowledge that Christ died for us, and He will be coming back to save us all. And until then, He and His Father will watch over us.

"For this reason, keep alert and never give up; pray always for all God's people."

-Ephesians 5:18

So as we light the candle of Hope this Sunday, as we journey together into the first Sunday of Advent, let's all try and discover the true meaning of Christmas together. And let's all pray that we will have enough hope to share with all the people of the world that need it more than us.

Catholics and Protestants

Dear all,

The blog has been dead for some time. But it's back!

This week, as the poster says, what is coming to be an anuual event, judging by the past year or so. It's the difference between Catholic and Protestant faith.

We'll be organizing it with the Christian Fellowship, so note that there's a change in venue. It's now at SR5 (Seminar Room 5) as opposed to the previous SR2.

Do come! Let's see what God wants to say to us.

May 30: The truth about the Bible

This is good...I'd even go so far to say that it is necessary.
Almost the entire Christian faith is based on the Bible. Even sacred tradition is mentioned the Bible, which led to the formation of the Catholic Church and the faith as we know it today.

Isn't it scary to think that we know so little of the authenticity of this source, upon which lives are built?

The Street Ministry

Here’s our weekly bulletin for you all. Now this week we will be doing something different.

This is not to say we are going to do stuff like run around with party hats on our heads, nor are we going to go duck-paddling with the frogs in the pond near Vista Komanwel.

No, nothing of the sort. This week, we will be joining the Christian Fellowship, to attend their talk about The Street Ministry. For a brief intro, the street ministry is a volunteer organization that tends to the homeless that populate the area surrounding Chow Kit Road, one of the more notorious places in Petaling Street. Every Saturday, a team of IMU students joins these people for an hour or so, giving out food, medical aid and demonstrating their awesome CPR skills. Okay, so I lied about the last one. But seriously though, it is no joke. It is hard, gratitude-free work. And you will hear all these and more, when their administrator, I think his name is Steven, comes to educate us.

I thought I’d just say this: We aren’t joining them simply because we’ve run out of things to do. The committee thinks that this is a good idea to expose you all to the darker side of Malaysia, and how some people really go out of their way to help a person in need. For love and love alone without any ulterior motive. And anyway, it would be stupid to call the speaker to come and speak TWICE, so these are the reasons why we’re going there.

Anyway, that’s only the first part. The second part is that we will actually get to follow them to help out in the Street Ministry. Then you guys will be able to put everything you learnt on Friday into practice. If anyone’s interested, let us know. Believe me, it is a rewarding experience, and we strongly encourage everyone to join.

This is also an excellent opportunity for all of you to get to know your CF brothers and sisters, so please, by all means, go! You won’t regret it.

P.S. Please keep the M207 in prayer. Apparently the EOS was a lot tougher than the previous ones. I mean, who the heck knows which Trypanosoma species infects East Africa anyway?And don't forget the N107 who are starting their exams too.

P.P.S I just realized some of the lecturers here probably do. Ha ha!

St John's Cathedral on Google Earth.

Our counterparts in UCSI (University College Sedaya International) have done an excellent job, complete with pictures, showing everyone where St John's Cathedral is.

St John's Cathedral, as they have mentioned, is the only Catholic cathedral in Kuala Lumpur. It's also one of the churches nearest to IMU that is fully accessible by LRT.

Hey peeps,

This is Jon here...and don't ask me why my username is jokken. It's a long story, albeit a boring one.

Thought I'd share something with you:

Yesterday (that being Friday) we had this rosary-making session, then we prayed one full rosary. Among the things we prayed for were the people of Burma and China.

So that day, after lectures, when I driving home, I heard on the news that there was a miracle rescue in China. A child had been found under the rubble of a destroyed school, 80 hours after the earthquake. Still alive.

God works in mysterious ways, and I think we all should not underestimate the power of prayer in our lives.

So let's keep praying. And here's what I think - I think God wants you to pray for everything, no matter how petty or small it may seem. So pray! And God can make this world a better place to live in.

This IS the month of Mary, after all. And it wouldn’t be complete if we didn’t have a rosary session.

A Month in Pictures.

So anyway, here are some of the things which we did for the previous three weeks or so.

The fourth week of April saw us praying over the articles which affected our lives today. Sometimes we forget that other people need our help, and that prayer – no matter how insignificant it may seem, changes lives. Because God can.

The first week of May was when we explored the story of Mary and Martha (the sisters of Lazarus) and how each of them had different personalities. Personally, I believe that each of us carries a bit of Mary and Martha inside of us.

And the second week of May resonated with the huge voice of Adrian Ng – the youth minister of CKK (NOT SFX. Oops) who told us – in no uncertain terms – how important and relevant the rosary is to us as Catholics.

A Letter from the Editor

Dear readers of the blog, and especially the people of the Catholic Students Society of IMU,

You know, usually I would prefer to remain anonymous when I post on the blog, but this time I think I need to let you guys know about the workings of the blog and such. You all might know this already but what the heck – publicity ma. Heh. Anyway, I’m Jon, and most of the job of updating and maintaining the blog is mine.

Why am I telling you this? Well, you may have noticed that the blog has seemed quite dead of lately and no one seems to be posting – except for Adeline, who valiantly put up the talk on the previous week’s schedule in the chatbox so that people would see. I could give you all many reasons why, but the truth is, I was slacking and no posts were put up as a result. So, instead of incriminating the whole committee, I thought I’d just write here and apologize for the inactivity.

These past few weeks, I and the rest of the committee have seen a…call it an upsurge la – of new faces and people who are willing to do the job for CSS, and this makes us really happy. There are people like Vanessa and Eugene (bearing in mind they have to sit for their GI and Hematology summatives tomorrow) and Joanne of M207, who really stepped up to respond to the call to lead the praise and worship, and many more. But I will not mention them here.

And even the people who persist in coming week after week, people who overcome differences in batches and battle absurd timing schedules to come here...it's really good to see you all.

Thank you guys. You are the people who will have to shoulder on the burden that the Church places on our shoulders in the future – and yours will be so much heavier, simply by virtue that you will be Catholics in a growing world of apathy and indifference.

Bible Study - 11th April

No, bible study is not boring! This week, and this month, actually, we're going to focus more on the book of Sirach and the book of James...and how they relate to finding God in perseverance of trials.

IMU is really quite a stressful place, but sometimes, because there are simply so so many activities to enjoy, students don't realize how much backlogged work they have until it hits them in the face...to say nothing about the event managers themselves!

So come, and find out how you can presevere through all of this with the Word of God.
